Straights of Mackinac

Sunday we left in the rain and drove through rain most of the day on our way to St Ignace, MI. We had lunch on the rainy shores of Lake Superior and then continued on to our RV Park on the shores of Lake Michigan just west of St Ignace.

The campground had recently suffered damage (11 trees blown over) from straight line winds. Our site was in the front row where the trees had blown down. At least we didn't have to worry about trees coming down on us.

Monday morning we caught the 9:00 AM Shepler's Ferry to Mackinac Island. This sailing took us under the Mighty Mackinac Bridge to get a good look at this impressive suspension bridge.

Our mission on Mackinac Island was to visit the fort which we missed on our last visit to the island. We ended up spending over three hours exploring the history of the fort and having lunch at their Tea Room overlooking the harbor. The fort was moved to the island from Mackinaw City in 1780 by the British and remained in their control until the War of 1812 when it came under US control.

Back on the mainland we couldn't resist the drive over the bridge to check it out from the south end.

Then in the evening Don and I got a few sunset shots and evening shots of the bridge.
